Youth-Led Skate Lab Rolls Forward with Energy and Purpose

ree

Our Skate Lab event held on Monday, June 30 at the Katikati Baptist Church was a youth-created event combining skateboarding skills, safety education, and community connection.

The event was the brainchild of local youths Michael Head and Liam Thoams-Kean, who worked alongside the Katikati Community-Led Development (CLD) Group to plan the day. The day’s programme included hands-on sessions in skateboard maintenance and skating basics, led by Michael and Liam themselves.

“Michael and Liam not only helped create something fun and helpful for others, but also developed leadership skills along the way,” said CLD Steering Group member John Bothwell.

Also on the agenda was a youth-first aid workshop, run by Steering Group member Donna Hannah, who offered practical advice on what to do when someone gets injured at the skatepark.

“If you don’t have a first aid kit with you, call 111, shout for help, and remember your ABCs — Airways, Breathing, Circulation,” she shared.

Lunch was provided thanks to the generosity of Community Breakfasts, while local businesses Sunny’s and Hammer Hardware chipped in with spot prizes. The Katikati MenzShed also got involved, and are now collaborating with one of the youth leaders to create a new skateboard rack for the park.

Feedback from whānau and young people has been overwhelmingly positive, with many already asking: When’s the next one?

“Our youth crew were incredible. They helped set up, welcomed people, and brought so much energy and joy,” said Youth Connector Leticia Kuizinas. “It’s so empowering for young people to be given opportunities to try something new and step outside their comfort zones. Our rangatahi have so much to offer — and watching them take the lead and shine is what it’s all about.”

More youth-led events are in the works – so watch this space!

Proceeds from Skate Lab are going toward the Katikati Skatepark upgrade, and the community is encouraged to get behind the project through donations or sponsorships. For info on how to donate or sponsor visit here
